Hello from your local Fraud Ambassadors 👋💙

I’m pleased to introduce myself as one of three Fraud Ambassadors for Cleveland Police covering the Middlesbrough district area.

Fraud and scams are not a victimless crime. 

They cost people their savings, confidence, and peace of mind — and they often target the people least able to spare it. Alongside our neighbourhood work, this role is about helping residents spot the warning signs early, know what to do if something feels wrong, and get the right support if they have already been targeted.

What we will be doing

🚶 Being a visible, approachable point of contact on fraud and scams across Middlesbrough district

📢 Sharing timely local and national scam alerts so you hear about new tricks before they reach your door, phone or inbox

🏘️ Attending parish meetings, community groups, coffee mornings, schools, and local events with short, practical talks

🏠 Visiting residents who may be more isolated or vulnerable, offering simple advice they can use straight away

🤝 Working with partners including Trading Standards, banks, Age UK, housing providers and community groups

📋 Helping people report fraud properly and signposting them to specialist support, including Cleveland’s fraud victim services

👀 Feeding local concerns back into the fraud team so we can target advice where it is most needed

What I will talk about

Common scams we see include:

Fake police, bank or courier calls asking you to move money or hand over cash

Online shopping and delivery scams

Romance and friendship fraud

Investment and “too good to be true” offers

Messages claiming you’ve won a prize, owe HMRC, or need to pay a fine

Doorstep callers pressuring you into work or payments

A simple rule that works

If someone contacts you unexpectedly and asks for money, personal details, passwords or bank cards — stop, challenge, protect. A genuine bank or the police will never ask you to withdraw cash, buy vouchers, or transfer money to a “safe account.”
